Feed fear a suck-it sandwich and birth

November 2022 by Josette, Urban birth Plus

Know fear, No fear.

Have you ever been shit scared? Pulse beating in places you never knew you could feel a pulse, trying to deep breathe like a pro and you end up rapid blinking and hyperventilating at the same time? Uh huh…I have. But before we carry on, let’s breathe actually, let’s breathe in and support your cortex. Relax, drop your shoulders, breathe in through your nose for a count of 4 and out of your mouth for 7. Repeat 3 times, but don’t fall asleep.

Happy clapping…

You're pregnant... but scared,

*Slow clapping*

Fear during pregnancy and birth can be a thing, it’s ok. It’s actually normal to be a liiittle bit scared about birth. Did you know around 15-22 percent of birthing people worldwide experience fear about the birth process at some point during the pregnancy?

Maybe it’s because you don’t know what’s going to happen, maybe it’s a lack of experience, maybe it’s an unpleasant experience from a previous birth, or maybe, just maybe, you got great aunt Hyacinth’s unhelpful birth story from 1954, which needs to stay its ass in 1954, right?! Right. We all love a great aunt Hyacinth story, but not today Hyacinth, not today.

I have experienced birth, twice. I remember watching certain birth shows when I was pregnant for the first time (10 years ago) and seeing birthing people in the height of labour. Were their coping techniques an exaggeration for entertainment purposes? Maybe, because who wants to see a calm, controlled birth?! (You do of course). But when I saw the experiences of others on TV, I KNEW I did not want that to be me. I wanted to birth the complete opposite. In control. Exposure to experiences can do one of two things; influence positively or indeed, negatively.

Can I tell you something?

It’s ok to feel fear- it’s talking to us, alerting us. But birth does not have to be something you desperately fear to the point of wanting to avoid it or block all sensations. Birth has been happening since time began (yep, before great aunt Hyacinth) and when time began there was no fear- birth just happened and the body’s natural support system took over to help the body birth. But because of the stories we’ve heard or read, the domination and advancement of medicine, the programmes we’ve watched, our brains create a picture of how our own birth will be and BAM, you’ve decided birth will be like great aunt Hyacinth’s and you’re adamant that birth is to be FEARED.

Here’s the thing though,

When you understand WHERE fear comes from, WHY fear happens, WHAT happens to your body when you experience fear and HOW you can manage and control your fear (if there is fear creeping in) you can stop those spiralling thoughts and THERE IS NO FEAR. When you KNOW fear, there is NO fear.

When you go into labour and birth fearing the process, this can make birth a negative experience. But when you go into birth in the know and consciously prepared as much as possible you reduce, even have the power to eliminate fear; feed fear a suck-it sandwich, birth like a bad ass without fear. THIS is the type of birth story that needs to be shared.

Vibe your birth,

Love, Josette
